Overview

This section illustrates leadership actions in areas of school life and operations. The five Guiding Conceptions and the five Actions Areas are depicted in a variety of formats. Individuals or schools may use these as models or exemplars to learn from a diverse range of leadership strategies and programs.

  1. Reflecting On Leadership Practice 01

    Reflection activities focused on individual and whole school leadership practices and capabilities. Aim is to identify and strengthen the alignment with the LSF.

  2. Leadership Dispositions 02

    Reflection activity focused on leadership dispositions. Aim is to build self knowledge and develop an action plan.

  3. Leadership Trainee Program 03

    School Program based on building leadership capacity by shadowing. Aim is to present leadership from an individual and school perspective.

  4. Leading Change in a School 04

    Individual’s review of leadership actions in managing change in a school. Aim is to illustrate how leadership can bring about positive change and improved learning outcomes for all students.

  5. Leadership Actions 05

    Analysis of leadership actions within a team, using the LSF as a guide. Aim is to describe an individual’s leadership journey by initiating a whole school approach to Literacy.

  6. Leadership and Change 06

    Reflection on one's role and actions as a leader in implementing change. Aim is to explain the development of leadership through the School Renewal change process.

  7. Develop a Leadership Credo 07

    Reflection activity based on moral purpose, relationship-building and sharing knowledge. Aim is to present viewpoints on these Guiding Conceptions, providing an opportunity to develop a leadership credo.

  8. Leadership and Community 08

    Reflection on the importance of connectedness between small schools and the local and global community. Aim is to provide ideas on how leaders, schools and communities create connections with each other.

  9. Leadership Mentoring 09

    School Program based on leadership mentoring. Aim is to present an action research project through its various stages including reflections and recommendations.

  10. Shared Leadership 10

    Different leaders discuss leadership in their schools. Aim is to highlight the importance and value of shared leadership and the capacity for all teachers to be leaders.

  11. Professional Learning Communities 11

    School-based Professional Learning Communities. Aim is to provide questions and guidelines to support the development and embedding of effective performance and development culture in a school.

  12. Formal and Informal Leadership Roles 12

    Reflection and interactive activity based on the many forms of leadership. Aim is to engage staff in differentiating formal and informal leadership roles and to develop an action plan.

  13. Leadership Talk 13

    Interactive activities in the form of an audit for members of a leadership team. Aim is to reflect on the quality of professional dialogue at your school.

  14. Strategic to Operational 14

    This exemplar provides a set of activities and resources to assist users to systematically work through intended strategies and end up with a concrete practical list of actions. It is ideally used when a policy or strategy has been endorsed by a school or team and it requires mobilising.

  15. Dream Teams 15

    Activities and reflections on the composition of an effective leadership team. Aim is to generate debate about dilemmas that arise when different individuals come together to work in teams.

  16. Power of Professional Learning Teams 16

    Activities and reflections on a school’s understanding of what it means to be an effective leader. Aim is to explore the role of the Professional Learning Team and how an effective team supports learning and teaching.

  17. Giving and Receiving Feedback 17

    Interactive activities demonstrating a model and a process for users to evaluate feedback situations and apply a set of effective guidelines. Aim is to put in place a plan for improvement to enhance this important communicative process.

  18. Change Management 18

    Case study and activities related to managing change and dealing with resistance in the area of learning and teaching. Aim is to assist teachers and leaders to reflect on the nature of contemporary learning and the implications for change management within their schools.

  19. Power to the People 19

    Activities and a reflection on leading a change initiative at your school. Aim is to demonstrate the importance of deliberately and intentionally preparing and planning for the ‘people’ component of managing change.

  20. Leading the Faith Community 20

    Activities examining what it means to be a Faith Leader. Aim is to provide support for leaders in relation to the challenges and responsibilities associated with being a leader in a faith community.

  21. Emerging Leadership in a Collaborative Way 21

    Reflections and activities on the role and actions of an emerging leader, centred on improving the school’s vision for teaching and learning. Aim is to illustrate a whole school approach to encouraging leadership designed to equip all teachers with the confidence and skills required to lead positive change in their school.

  22. Collaborative Leadership through Action Research 22

    Reflections and activities demonstrating collaborative leadership from a network of maths leaders who worked in partnership to lead an action research project across three schools. Aim is to illustrate how schools forge partnerships to learn from each other and have a positive impact on students’ growth and learning.

  23. Connecting Reflective Practice and Leadership 24

    Activities centred on the value of reflective practice in leadership to mobilise colleagues to improve learning opportunities for students. Aim is to illustrate how a school provides opportunities and professional learning for teachers to take up leadership roles and to learn from experience.
